    Planning Guide

Best Time to Walk the Camino

Choosing the right month can make all the difference to your pilgrimage experience.

The Camino de Santiago can technically be walked year-round, but the experience varies dramatically by season. The Portuguese Coastal route benefits from the moderating influence of the Atlantic, but weather, daylight, crowds, and accommodation availability all shift throughout the year.

    Spring (April–May)

    Excellent

Wildflowers blanket the countryside. Temperatures are mild (15–22°C). Fewer crowds than summer. Some rain possible, especially in April. May is arguably the best month overall.

    Summer (June–August)

    Good to Hot

June is superb — long days, warm weather, green landscapes. July and August are hotter (up to 30°C+), more crowded, and accommodation books up early. The coast offers relief from heat.

    Autumn (September–October)

    Excellent

September rivals May as the ideal month. Warm, golden light, fewer pilgrims, harvest season. October is cooler with more rain, but the autumn colours are stunning.

    Winter (November–March)

    Challenging

Short days, cold rain, and many accommodations close. Not recommended unless you enjoy solitude and don't mind wet conditions. The coastal route is more viable than inland routes.

    Our Recommendation

For the Portuguese Coastal Camino, we particularly recommend mid-May to mid-June and mid-September to early October. These windows offer the best combination of pleasant weather, manageable crowds, availability of quality accommodations, and the natural beauty of the coastline.

June is the longest day of the year and walking the coast as the sun sets over the Atlantic at 9:30 PM is truly magical. September brings the warmth of late summer but with a softer, more golden light and the first hints of the harvest season — grapes, figs, and chestnuts.

    Holy Years (Año Santo Xacobeo)

When the Feast of St. James (July 25th) falls on a Sunday, it is declared a Holy Year. The next Holy Year is 2027. During Holy Years, pilgrim numbers surge dramatically — sometimes doubling. If you want to walk in a Holy Year, book very early. If you prefer a quieter experience, aim for the year before or after.
