    Preparation Guide

    Fitness & Preparation

You don't need to be an athlete. You just need to be willing to walk — and we'll handle the rest.

How Fit Do You Need to Be?

This is the question we're asked most often, and the honest answer is: moderately fit. If you can comfortably walk 10–15 km on relatively flat terrain, you're ready for our supported Camino. The Portuguese Coastal route is not mountainous — the terrain is mostly flat to gently undulating, with well-maintained paths, boardwalks, and occasional forestry tracks.

The key difference with our car-assisted pilgrimage is flexibility. On any given day, you can choose to walk the full stage (typically 20–27 km), walk a shorter section and be picked up by your driver, or even skip a stage entirely if you're tired or the weather is poor. There's no pressure, no group to keep up with, and no judgment.

    A Simple 6-Week Training Plan

You don't need a gym or special equipment. Just walk — regularly, consistently, and gradually increasing distance.

    Weeks 1–2

Walk 30–45 minutes, 3–4 times per week. Flat terrain, comfortable pace. Focus on wearing in your walking shoes.

    Weeks 3–4

Increase to 60–90 minutes, 3–4 times per week. Include some hills if possible. Try one longer walk of 10–12 km at the weekend.

    Weeks 5–6

Walk 2–3 hours at least twice per week. Do one 15–18 km walk on a weekend. Walk on varied terrain — paths, trails, cobblestones. Carry your daypack to get used to the weight.

    Common Concerns

    "I have bad knees/hips"

Many of our guests are over 50 and manage joint issues. Walking poles help enormously (we can provide them). The coastal route's flat terrain is kinder than mountain paths. And with car assistance, you can always shorten a day if your body needs rest.

"I'm overweight / not very active"

The Camino is walked at your own pace. There's no clock, no competition. Many of our most transformed guests started with low fitness levels and surprised themselves. The 6-week training plan above is all you need.

    "What if I can't finish a stage?"

Your driver is always reachable by phone. If you're tired, injured, or simply done for the day, they'll pick you up within minutes and take you to your accommodation. No questions asked, no guilt, no problem.

    The Real Secret

"The Camino prepares you for the Camino. By day three, your body adjusts. By day five, you find your rhythm. By day eight, you don't want it to end. Trust the process."
