Arcade Oysters and the Historic Bridge of Ponte Sampaio

Some Camino memories come from the simplest pauses: a taste of the sea, a riverside stroll, a stone bridge beneath your feet. Arcade and nearby Ponte Sampaio bring those pleasures together, offering a rewarding stop as your journey continues north through Galicia.

Arcade: a taste of Galicia’s coastal life

Arcade, in the municipality of Soutomaior, is known for its oysters. Set near the inner end of the Ría de Vigo, it is a place where the Camino meets Galicia’s deep connection with the sea.

If you enjoy shellfish, leave time for an oyster tasting rather than treating Arcade as somewhere to hurry through. Expect a distinctly briny flavour, best appreciated slowly. Ask what is available that day and how it is served.

You do not have to eat oysters to enjoy the stop. A stroll towards the waterfront offers a welcome change of pace, with estuary views replacing the enclosed lanes and woodland paths of other Camino stretches.

Ponte Sampaio: cross the river, meet the history

Close to Arcade, the stone bridge of Ponte Sampaio crosses the River Verdugo. Its succession of arches and riverside setting make it a memorable landmark on the Portuguese Camino.

The bridge is closely associated with the Battle of Ponte Sampaio in 1809, when Spanish forces and local resistance helped halt a French advance during the Peninsular War. It is a substantial piece of history to encounter in such a peaceful setting.

Take your time on the approach and look back once you have crossed. The bridge is worth seeing from the riverbank as well as from its deck, where the rhythm of walking can make it easy to miss the structure beneath you.

Enjoy the two stops as one unhurried experience

Arcade and Ponte Sampaio work naturally together: one offers a taste of the estuary, the other a striking river crossing. Allow room for both rather than squeezing a tasting into a hurried walking break.

On a northbound Camino journey, this area lies between Vigo and Pontevedra. It makes a satisfying transition from the coastal atmosphere around Vigo towards the inland stretches ahead.

A simple approach is to explore Arcade, pause for refreshments if you wish, and then continue towards the bridge. Keep the order flexible around the weather, your appetite and how your legs feel.

    Practical tips for your visit

A little flexibility helps you get more from this stop, especially if an oyster tasting is high on your wish list.

    • Check oyster availability locally rather than assuming every venue will serve them.
    • Mention shellfish allergies before ordering. If you have been advised to avoid raw shellfish, choose a suitable alternative.
    • Wear walking shoes with reliable grip; stone surfaces can become slippery in wet weather.
    • Carry a light waterproof layer, as conditions near the estuary can change.
    • Keep the bridge crossing clear when stopping for photographs, and remain attentive to other users.
    • Budget separately for oysters, other meals and drinks; daily breakfast is included in our Camino packages.
