Caldas de Reis: Warm Springs for Tired Pilgrim Feet

Somewhere around the last few days of the Camino, your feet start asking questions. Caldas de Reis has been answering them for about two thousand years.

A spa town on the pilgrim road

Caldas de Reis is a small Galician town on the Portuguese Way, between Pontevedra and Padrón. Its name says it all: "caldas" means hot waters. Warm mineral springs rise here naturally, and the Romans knew this place as Aquis Celenis — a stop to bathe and recover on the road north.

Pilgrims have been doing the same ever since. It's one of the few places on the Camino where rest is not just allowed, it's tradition.

    The public fountain everyone visits

In the centre of town, warm spring water flows from a public fountain known as As Burgas. You'll often see walkers sitting on its edge, boots off, soaking their feet. Nobody minds — it's what the fountain is for.

The town also has traditional spa hotels built around the springs. If a proper thermal soak sounds like heaven after several days on foot, tell us and we'll look into it for your stay.

Slow moments by the river Umia

The river Umia runs through Caldas, crossed by old stone bridges and lined with shaded walks. Just outside town, the countryside opens into vineyards and green hills — this is Albariño country.

It's a gentle, unhurried place. The perfect setting to catch your breath before the emotional final days into Padrón and Santiago.

How we build rest into your Camino

Many pilgrims push hard through the last stages because they're carrying everything and racing the clock. With our private car assistance, you don't have to.

Your luggage is always taken care of. If your legs need a break, the car is there and you can ride a section instead of walking it. Breakfast is included every morning, so you start each day properly fed — and you decide where lunch and dinner happen.

Caldas de Reis lies on the route between Pontevedra and Padrón. Mention it when you request your quote and we'll make room for a slower afternoon there.

    Simple foot-care habits that work

    • Air your feet at every long stop — take boots and socks off
    • Alternate warm water with a splash of cool river water
    • Change into dry socks at lunch
    • Treat any hot spot immediately, before it becomes a blister
