Portuguese Coastal vs. Central Camino: Which Should You Choose?

Both routes start in Porto and end in Santiago de Compostela. They differ in scenery, atmosphere and how busy they feel.

    The Central Route

The Central route heads inland through Barcelos, Ponte de Lima and Valença before crossing into Spain at Tui. It is the historic main line, with vineyards, farmland and medieval bridges, and is generally the busier of the two.

    The Coastal Route

The Coastal route follows the Atlantic north from Porto, through fishing towns, beaches and wooden boardwalks, past Viana do Castelo and along the Galician coast towards Baiona and Vigo. It feels fresher, with sea breezes and big horizons.

Why our itinerary uses the coast

Our 10-day trip combines the best of both: coastal walking from Porto to Viana do Castelo, a crossing into Spain at Tui, and the final approach through Padrón into Santiago. Car assistance lets us include highlights like Baiona that walkers on foot often miss.
