Redondela: Where the Coastal and Central Portuguese Camino Routes Meet

Redondela is a meeting place in more ways than one. Here, pilgrims arriving from the coast join those following the inland Portuguese Camino, bringing different stories onto the same path towards Santiago. With railway viaducts overhead and the Ría de Vigo nearby, this Galician town makes a rewarding pause—not just a point to pass through.

Two Portuguese routes, one onward path

The Portuguese Coastal Route and the Portuguese Central Route come together in Redondela. Walkers on the coastal approach arrive from the direction of Vigo, while those on the central route come through Tui and O Porriño.

From here, the shared Camino continues towards Arcade, Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis and Padrón before reaching Santiago de Compostela. The meeting is less about a grand landmark than a change in the rhythm of the walk: new faces, fresh conversations and a common direction.

If you have been following the coast, Redondela also marks a shift in scenery. The estuary remains close, but town streets, wooded paths and inland stretches increasingly shape the journey.

    Look up: Redondela’s distinctive viaducts

Redondela’s railway viaducts are its most recognisable landmarks. These elevated structures give the town an unusual silhouette, carrying its railway heritage high above everyday streets.

Below them, the older centre rewards a slow wander. Look for the Church of Santiago, pause in a small square and give yourself time to notice the town beyond the Camino arrows.

The waterfront at nearby Cesantes offers a different perspective on the area, with views across the Ría de Vigo towards San Simón Island. It is a worthwhile separate outing if time allows, rather than something to assume lies directly on your walking route.

    Walking onwards towards Arcade

Leaving Redondela, the Camino works its way out of town and climbs towards quieter, greener surroundings before continuing towards Arcade. Expect a mixture of lanes, paths and built-up stretches rather than an uninterrupted woodland walk.

There are rises and descents to take steadily, especially in wet weather. Galicia’s changing light can make the landscape beautiful, but rain can also leave stone and uneven ground slippery.

Beyond Arcade, the historic bridge at Ponte Sampaio crosses the River Verdugo. For walkers who enjoy the transition from town streets to river scenery, this onward stretch offers plenty of variety.

Practical tips for your Redondela stop

A little flexibility makes this meeting point much more enjoyable. Leave room for a pause rather than treating Redondela only as another place to tick off.

    • Wear walking shoes with reliable grip for slopes, uneven paving and potentially wet paths.
    • Keep a light waterproof layer handy, even when the morning starts clear.
    • Carry water and a snack rather than relying on finding somewhere open exactly when you need it.
    • Follow the Camino arrows and shell markers carefully through town, checking your route map if a junction is unclear.
    • Treat Cesantes and its waterfront as an additional excursion, with time and transport planned accordingly.
    • Choose your walking distance around your own pace and energy, not simply the stage divisions in a guidebook.
