What is the Variante Espiritual?
The Variante Espiritual is an alternative branch of the Portuguese Camino that leaves the main route near Pontevedra. It passes through the coastal village of Combarro and climbs towards Armenteira before continuing through the valley to Vilanova de Arousa.
From there, pilgrims can travel by boat through the Ría de Arousa and up the River Ulla towards Pontecesures. A short onward walk brings them to Padrón, where the journey rejoins the main Portuguese Camino towards Santiago.
This is a detour rather than the standard route through Caldas de Reis. Its appeal lies in the contrast: sheltered coastal scenery, a wooded inland climb and a final approach by water.
Following the tradition of St James by water
The boat journey is commonly known as the Traslatio. It recalls the Christian tradition that the body of St James was brought by sea to Galicia after his martyrdom in Jerusalem. That account belongs to pilgrimage tradition, rather than a historically verified voyage.
The modern journey crosses the Ría de Arousa and continues inland along the Ulla. Mussel-growing platforms, wooded riverbanks and stone crosses along the waterway give this stretch a character quite different from the walking stages.
Padrón carries that tradition ashore. Inside the Church of Santiago, the Padrón stone is traditionally associated with the mooring of the boat that brought the apostle’s body. For pilgrims interested in the stories behind the Camino, it gives the town particular resonance.
The walking is part of the attraction
Combarro is known for its traditional stone granaries, called hórreos, beside the waterfront. It is a lovely place to slow down before the route turns inland towards Armenteira.
The climb towards Armenteira deserves respect: this is not an entirely gentle seaside stroll. The monastery provides a distinctive landmark before the route enters the landscape of the Ruta da Pedra e da Auga.
Along this stretch, old watermills stand beside a stream, with shaded paths linking woodland and village scenery. Underfoot conditions matter here. After rain, stones and roots can be slippery, so a leisurely pace is often the most rewarding one.
Practical tips for planning the spiritual variant
Treat the boat crossing as something to plan around, not a connection you can assume will run whenever you arrive. A little flexibility makes this detour much easier to enjoy.
- Check boat availability and departure arrangements in advance. Sailings can depend on tides, weather and the operator’s schedule.
- Allow enough time for the detour rather than trying to squeeze it into an unchanged walking itinerary.
- Carry a waterproof layer and something warm for the boat; conditions on the water can feel cooler than on land.
- Choose walking shoes with good grip for woodland paths, wet stone and uneven ground.
- Keep water, sun protection, any medication and your pilgrim credential in your day bag.
- If earning the Compostela is important to you, confirm the current requirements with the Pilgrim’s Office before planning boat travel or car-assisted stages. Do not assume every combination qualifies.
