Crossing into Spain: Valença and Tui

Crossing the Minho River on foot, from Portugal into Spain, is one of the Portuguese Camino's most memorable moments.

    Valença's fortress

Valença do Minho is crowned by star-shaped fortifications overlooking the river. From here, the international iron bridge leads across to Galicia.

    Tui Cathedral

Tui's fortress-like cathedral dominates the old town on the Spanish side. Remember: Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal, so your watch jumps forward as you cross.

    The 100 km mark

Tui is just over 100 km from Santiago, making it the most popular starting point for pilgrims who want to earn the Compostela on the Portuguese route.
